Another Dreamcast game set for launch?

GameBrink is reporting that Sega has yet another release for the "dead" Dreamcast due out March 23, 2006 in Japan. The game, entitled Under Defeat, is a helicopter shooter which is currently sweeping Japanese arcades. From the article: "Watch for import store pre-orders in the near future. Reports suggest a retail price of 6,090 Yen which is $52."

No official word from Sega as of yet, but keep your fingers crossed for all you Dreamcast enthusiasts out there.

Be warned: the amusing Mark Twain quote about death is not appropriate here. But still, go the Dreamcast. It'd be very cool if Dreamcast ended up surviving on homebrew and indy development, and honestly it wouldn't hurt Sega too much to open source the dev kits. They'd still hold the patents on the hardware, so if they can create demand for the console, there's no telling what could happen.

Long live the dreamcast! I always thought there was a market to continue creating games for "dead" systems, let's hope Sega tests the waters for this. What they should really do is open the system up and create free downloadable dev environments for these sytstems.

A few years back you were able to pick up a dreamcast for $40.00. The games were all selling for sub $20.00. This was a remarkable deal. We still break out the Dreamcast for Powerstone 2 and Ooga Booga's boar polo mode (which if you like the Nintendo sports titles like Mario Tennis and Super Strikers, you should definitely check out).

Going along with #1's ideas, I too agree that it would be a great idea for Sega to start selling or open source the dev kits. It's the perfect system for new companies (or individuals attempting to break in to the games industry) to test their ideas on. The system is not so far out of date that transfering to PS2 or Xbox is out of the question and developers can take advantage of directx features. You also get online connectivity (RJ11 or RJ45 adapter).

List goes on and on.. and you know what? I would buy one.

Its a great move if you ask me. Why is the Dreamcast dead? Games were no longer being made. Some games were axed right before they were to be shipped. We only had so much to go on. Why not keep turning them out? If people kept on makeing games, they might be able to make a profit because all the money would go straight in there pocket. hmmm.....

Honestly, what's going on with the Dreamcast in Japan is no different than what goes on with any "dead" system over there.

Look up when the last Japan-only Saturn game was made (if you can find the info). I don't remember exactly but my guess is it was sometime around 2002 or 2003. PS1 games are *still* coming out there. Japan is weird that way. They love new technology but they hold onto old game systems forever - just look at the 20 year lifespan of the original Famicom, which was still a viable system long after the NES had been discontinued here.

The Dreamcast is as dead as any dead system. The fact that games are still released for it occasionally changes nothing.

Why has this become such a big topic for news sites? It's really not.

Look at the records!

New Dreamcast games have been trickling out ever since the consoles official demise. But they have all been one of two things:

1) scrolling shooters ported from arcades

2) japanese dating simulations ported from the pc

I love my dreamcast but I don't see it making a comback that warrents newly developed games for it. I think this is giving people false hope.

That's not the Nintendo Revolution logo--the logo the developer of this game has two circles; They're G-rev, the G is real big and fancy in the first circle then the 'rev' is in the next circle part of their logo.

That looks just like Zero Gunner II which is awesome.It will sell ok in Japan but most poeple will download it illegaly everywhere else.DC games are way to easy to burn.

I really like the idea of Sega going open source with the dev kits. At this point, they really have nothing to lose. Id, the developer that makes Doom, goes open source with their graphics engines after they don't have any financial life left in them. And people can create games, and its great.

Honestly, Nintendo would be smart to go open source with their NES, SNES, and N64 engines in response to the Revolutions supposed ability to emulate games from all of those systems. It could creat a huge new and dedicated community for them. They already do well with kids, but going open source on the older systems could convince a lot of harder core gamers to buy a revolution. Unlike Sony and Microsoft, which both sell their units at heavy losses with the plan of making it up later in licensing fees on peripherals and games, Nintendo is known to at least break even on new systems they sell, so they have nothing to lose. If any homebrews get decently popular, they could even do what Valve did for Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat, Team Fortress, and a couple others, and commercialize them, allowing them to essentially make money on games that they didn't spend a penny developing and didn't risk a penny investing in.
